Sultana Kamal 34th National Women Chess Championship 2014 began from 7th February at the hall-room of Bangladesh Chess Federation in Dhaka, Bangladesh. This year national women championship was named noted athlete Sultana Kamal as like previous 33rd national women championship. Sultana Kamal, elder daughter-in-law of Father of the nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, was a 'Blue' recipient athlete of Dhaka University in 1974. She was assassinated with the father of the nation and other family members on August 15, 1975.
Total 12 players including 2 WIM, 4 WFM and 6 FIDE rated are participating in the event. It’s the national women championship of Bangladesh and it is primarily basis of the selection of Bangladesh Women team in the forthcoming World Chess Olympiad, Asian Continental Championship for women, Women Zonal and other international women events where need to represent of Bangladesh. Mr. Shibnath Roy (Joint-Secretary of Bangladesh Government) and Secretary of National Sports Council inaugurated the event to present as chief guest on 7th February before start the first round games. Four players are participating directly in the women championship, they are: reigning woman champion WFM Sultana Shirin Sharmin, reigning woman runner-up and former woman champion WIM Shamima Akter Liza, 18 times national women champion and the legend of national women chess in Bangladesh WIM Rani Hamid, former woman champion WFM Tanima Parveen. Another eight players are participating to qualified from selection phase. They are: Sharmin Samiha Shimmi, WFN Khan Nazrana, Chowdhury Mahmuda Hoque Moly, Jahan Dilara Nupur, Jahanara Haque, WFM Sultana Zakia, Rahman Hamid and Kiswara Shajrin Evena.
