The Azerbaijan Chess Championship for men took place from 21st until 29th January in Baku. The round robin event with ten participants boasted average elo of 2497. GM Eltaj Safarli and the top-seeded GM Nidjat Mamedov shared the first place with 6,5 points each, but the title of the national champion went to Safarli thanks to the better tiebreak score.

"I am very happy, this is the first time I win the national championship," GM Safarli shared, "Now I am preparing for Aeroflot and I hope that my good run with Reggio Emilia and the National Championship will continue."
