The Federación Uruguaya de Ajedrez hosted the 13th American Continental Classical Championship 2018 from 1-10th June at the Hotel Regency in Montevideo, Uruguay.

A total of 167 players from 12 federations participated in the event. Among them were 25 Grandmasters and 21 International Masters.

The Championship was played through 11 rounds of Swiss system and the total prize fund was 20,000 USD.

US champion Samuel Shankland took the winner's trophy after the decicive last round victory with black against his compatriot Jeffery Xiong. This is Shankland's third major tournament win in the past few months. He tweeted:

Won the American Continental with 9.0/11. 2019 World Cup ticket punched, 3 tournament wins in a row, 60 classical games without a loss, 2727 live. Will come back to earth some day, but for now, I'm a happy guy!

Second place is for GM Diego Flores from Argentina with 8,5/11 points, who also qualified for the 2019 FIDE World Cup in Khanty-Mansiysk.

The remaining two qualifying spots for the World Cup were to be decided in a rapid tie-break between seven players sharing the third place. Peruvian Grandmasters Jorge Cori and Emilio Cordova, both students of the Webster University, securred the tickets for Khanty-Mansiysk.
