US champion Sam Shankland wins Capablanca Memorial in Havana |

The Cuban Federation and the National Chess Commission, under the auspices of the National Institute of Sports Physical Education and Recreation (INDER), and with the support of Tryp Habana Libre, organized the 53rd Capablanca Memorial International Tournament from 9-19th May, 2018.
The main Elite Group was a six-players double round robin with the average elo 2649.
US champion GM Samuel Shankland convincingly won the tournament with 7,5/10 points, leaving the second placed GM Aleksey Dreev point and a half behind.
After the victory Shankland posted on twitter: "Make that two 2800+ results in a row! Up to 2717 FIDE and #30 in the World."

The very strong Open section had 192 participants from 12 federations, including 25 Grandmasters and 47 International Masters.
GM Cristhian Cruz from Peru took the winner's trophy after edging the opposition on tie-break.
