Harkany Spa
Harkany Spa at Mount Tenkes (HUN)

The fame of Mount Tenkes, the traditional chess tournament is named after, goes as far back as the 1703-11 Hungarian freedom battles against the Habsburg Empire.

Nowadays, the area gives ground for noble chess battles and provides excellent opportunities for recreation. 111 contestants from 10 countries came together this year to combine chess with joys offered by the unique wellness facilities of the world famous thermal spa.

19 FIDE-Title holders including 2 GM-s and 10 IM-s assured the possibility of achieving WGM, IM or WIM norms.

The winner, GM Chernyshov Konstantin (RUS) is usually successful in Hungary. It has been the fifth occasion he has won the Tenkes Cup. He also won several First Saturday GM tournaments in Budapest during the past five years. IM Kaposztas Miklos described his style as deeply positional, reminding him of the legendary Hungarian GM Barcza Gedeon.

He did great job as a coach too since his daughter, Chernyshova Natalia achieved her fist WIM norm.

The winner of the rating group Heining Thomas (GER) was born in India, the ancient home of chess and that may have been a motif attracting him to loving this game. He has become a chess organizer himself. The most outstanding young player of girls was Lukacs Anna Kata (Paksi SE) winning 198 FIDE rating points while Gömböcz Zsofia (Szombathely) collected 148 points.

The greatest sensation of boys was the youngest participant, the 8 years old Bodrogi Bendegúz pupil of Baptist Primary Scool of Velence (Zöldliget) winning 150 points. His school adopted chess into official curriculum some years ago but they regularly have outstanding success in gymnastics and basketball too.

All players received free entry into the Harkany Thermal spa, which has got a lot of different temperature pools both outdoor and indoor. The medical effect of the water is miraculous and similar to Dead Sea of Israel. Info: http://www.harkanyfurdo.hu/en

This year has reached the jubilee of 40 years in the rich history of the tournament.

The first Tenkes Cup event was organized in 1977 by Ozdi Lajos who was a chess fun with very high quality human educations.

The best player ever participated in the event was David Bronstein (RUS) ex World Champion Candidate. The oldest participant IM Kaposztas Miklos (HUN) set up a special record being the only player who took part in all the 40 tournaments.

Tournament Director Ambrus Lajos has promised to keep this great tradition alive and he needs the full support of the Harkany City Council and the management of the famous Harkany Spa to make it even nicer. The tournament is organized in the second part of November every year.
