Magnus Carlsen took the lead at the first top tournament of the year 78th Tata Steel Masters after drawing against Sergey Karjakin in the eighth round of the competition. The world champion collected 5.5/8 points to surge ahead with half a point advantage in front of Fabiano Caruana.

The former leader Caruana took second position with 5 points, after being defeated by David Navara. The Czech top player showed stunning technique in the endgame and trapped Caruana’s king into a checkmate net.

The other decisive game of the eighth round was Hou Yifan, playing Keres Attack with White pieces against Dutch player Loek Van Wely. Black’s imminent attack transformed into material advantage which was easily converted by Van Wely.
