 The traditional 123rd New Zealand Championship was held from 2nd January to 10th January, 2016, at the National Chess Center of Devonport, New Zealand.
The event was played in 9 rounds, according to the FIDE Swiss system, while the time control was 90’ + 30”.
Englishman GM Gawain Jones took the trophy in competition of 66 players from 11 different countries. He scored 7.5 points out of 9 rounds and left the nearest followers half a point behind.
Chinese woman player GM Ju Wenjun clinched the silver after a three-way tie for the second place with GM Ma Qun from China and GM Nigel Short from England. The whole group finished the event with 7 points.
