The 2016 Basel Chess Festival took place from January 1st through January 5th, 2016, in Basel, Switzerland’s third most populous city.

The event was highlighted by a 7-round Swiss Master event.

The representative of Azerbaijan, GM Arkadij Naiditsch, emerged a solo winner with 5.5/7 points, after scoring five wins, 1 draw and 1 loss. He lifted the trophy for second year in a row and left the nearest followers half a point behind.

The second place was shared in an eight-way tie by GM Adrien Demuth (France), IM Bilel Bellahcene (France), IM Arthur Pijpers (Netherlands), IM Jan Michael Sprenger (Germany), IM Andreas Heimann (Germany), WIM Yuliya Shvayger (Israel), IM Titas Stremavicius (Lithuania) and GM Mihajlo Stojanovic (Serbia), after the whole group finished the event with 5 points.
