3rd Sinquefield Cup

The 3rd Annual Sinquefield Cup has just kicked off at the Chess Club and Scholastic Center of Saint Louis (CCSCSL), U.S.

The event is taking place from August 22 - September 3, 2015 and it marks the second leg of the Grand Chess Tour.

In the first round of the competition all the games finished decisively.

The reigning World champion Magnus Carlsen (2853) lost second game in a row against World #3 Veselin Topalov (2816). Carlsen sacrificed a piece on move 10th but his opponent handled White’s activity and converted the advantage.

The local star and World #4 Hikaru Nakamura (2814) defeated former World champion Viswanathan Anand (2816) with White pieces in Catalan Defence. White’s space advantage and increasing activity forced Anand to give a pawn and resign just a few moves later.

The Catalan defence favored White in one more game, Anish Giri (2793) against Alexander Grischuk (2771). Black gave up on move 34th, when Giri had threatened an inevitable checkmate.

Levon Aronian (2765) won an amazing game against Sinquefield 2014 convincing winner Fabiano Caruana (2808), while Maxime Vachier-Lagrave (2731) defeated Wesley So (2779) with Black pieces in Gruenfeld Defence.
