GM Kirill Alekseenko tops Polugaevsky Memorial 2015 Print

The 2015 edition of Lev Polugaevsky Memorial took place from July 3-11 at the Polugaevsky Chess Club, in Samara, the sixth largest city in Russia.

132 players took part in the 9-round Swiss open, dedicated to the memory of the legendary player. The event was the seventh qualifying stage of the 2015 Cup of Russia.

Russian player GM Kirill Alekseenko grabbed the first prize of RUB 150,000 (approximately € 2,400) after winning the tournament with the convincing 8/9 score. Alekseenko won eight games and lost only against GM Artyom Timofeev in the sixth round of the competition.

GM Vladimir Dobrov of Russia edged his countryman IM Alexey Mokshanov on a better tie-break score to take the second place, after both players finished the Polugaevsky Memorial with 7/9 points.

Grandmaster Lev Abramovich Polugaevsky (20 November 1934 – 30 August 1995). He was a frequent contender for the world chess championship, although he never achieved that title. He was one of the strongest players in the world from the early 1960s until the late 1980s, as well as a distinguished author and opening theorist whose contributions in this field remain important to the present day.
