Mihok Oliver and Burg Twan (NED) tied, winning „Clash of Continents” at First Saturday Budapest

Well organized groups of South Africa and Turkmenistan made the First Saturday July events a „Clash of Continents”. The Chess Federation of South Africa supported a group consisting of 10 members including players, coaches and arbiters. It is not the first time they came to take up useful experience. The Turkmens appeared for the third time with another organized group led by GM Annageldyev Orazly. They have also found Budapest a perfect place to enrich their experience. There were four continents represented.

Two young IM-s, came tied winning the GM event.  Mihok Oliver (22, HUN) player of Makoi VSE, 1st Division in the HUN Team Ch., missed the GM norm only with half a point due to his poor start.

Burg Twan (25, NED) is working as a business controller for Quintinq Company in Den Bosch. He impressively controlled the black and white pieces this time performing his third GM norm with 7.5 points after R10. It is not surprising at all if we consider that he had beaten so great players as Giri Anish, Bacrot Etienne or Ni Hua.

A pleasant surprise was the dynamic play of Kozak Adam (13, HUN) performed his first IM norm. His progress has been really spectacular during the past two years.

Atabayev Saparmyrat (TKM) could significantly increase his Rating points in addition to his current valid IM Title Application.

Mainly the IM-s dominated the IM section but Esenov Annaberdi (TKM) was close to the IM norm. Both Turkmen players achieved rating gains so they did not come in vain. The only woman participant, Umudova Nargiz played in enigmatic style surprising his opponents with her original ideas and unexpected moves. She would deserve the WGM Title since she definitely plays at least at that level.

The “Clash of Continents” was won by Asia in the FM-A section. The only woman participant Uuriintuya Uurtsaikh (MGL) topped all her experienced male opponents collecting 154 FIDE rating points.  Her name is hard to pronounce for Europeans but we will have to learn it pretty soon if she continues playing in such a commanding, tactical style.

The lower Rating Section was won by Szurkos Andras (HUN) who is not only a chess master but a poet, a lyricist too. He takes games as seriously as life and he follows this idea as his “Ars Poetica”. We can observe this by his games too, since those are always full of complications and conflicts like situations in real life.

The co-winner Marcu Simon (SVK) who is Romanian by birth is also an enthusiastic fighter and lover of chess.

The Asian representative, Norooz Melika (IRI) played chess with deep involvement into the abyss of the game regardless of the opponent, just concentrating on the position given. It is sometimes hard to close out all external disturbances but she seemed to get close to it.
