The 6th Hainan Danzhou Super Grandmaster Chess Tournament is currently in progress in the city of Danzhou, situated in the northwest of the Chinese island province of Hainan.

The event is taking place from July 2 through July 11 to decide the winner among ten of the strongest chess players from China, Cuba and India.

Chinese players GM Liren Ding (2749), GM Yangyi Yu (2736), GM Yi Wei (2724), GM Yue Wang (2716), GM Hua Ni (2703), GM Xiangzhi Bu (2695), GM Shanglei Lu (2595) and IM Chen Wang (2521), world #70 GM Lazaro Bruzon Batista (2669) of Cuba and the fifth best Indian player GM Krishnan Sasikiran (2640) are vying for the hefty prize fund in total of CNY 320,000 (nearly € 47,000). The winner will be awarded CNY 100,000.

GM Yue Wang took the lead with four points out of five rounds. Wang drew his games with Black pieces but he was uncompromising when playing White, defeating Lu, Wei and Ding in the first, third and fifth round, respectively.

GM Hua Ni is currently second with only half point less than the leader, while GM Yangyi Yu takes third position with 3/5 points.

The fourth place is shared in a three-way tie by GM Ding, GM Bu and GM Wei at 2.5 points, but only Bu is unbeaten with solid five draws. His last game, however, was far from a “GM draw”. He played 73 moves against Yu to get king vs. king at the final position.
