Fabiano Caruana, who has just returned on the U.S. rating list, emerged a convincing winner of the 43rd Dortmund Sparkassen Meeting elite chess tournament, which took place from June 27 to July 5, in the NRW Orchestra Centre in Dortmund, Germany.
Caruana scored 5.5/7 points, leaving the nearest followers 1.5 point behind. He started with a draw against Ian Nepomniachtchi and a loss against Wesley So, to finish with impressive 5/5 score.
This “déjà vu” from Sinquefield Cup 2014 (when he won even seven games in a row) added 11 new Elo points to his rating, helping him pass the 2800 barrier once again.
Wesley So and Liviu-Dieter Nisipeanu tied for the second place with 4 points each. Despite Nisipeanu defeating So in their direct encounter, the second U.S. player in Dortmund took the silver because of the first tie-break criteria – higher number of games played with Black pieces.
Vladimir Kramnik finished clear fourth with 3.5 points after his last round loss against Wesley So.
Arkadij Naiditsch edged Nepomniachtchi on a better tie-break score to finish fifth with 3 points, while Yifan Hou, the highest rated woman in the world, shared seventh place with Georg Meier at 2.5 points.
