GM Berczes David won the 6th BORLOY memorial - First Saturday Budapest GM Tournament

The GM tournament of this month was dedicated to the Memory of a well-known Hungarian Master Borloy Androvitzky Karoly (1922-2000). He was not only an outstanding chess player of his time but was a talented mathematician and a good poet. He was the forerunner of the FIDE-Rating System to be introduced.

GM Berczes David (HUN), who is a university student in the US, successfully combined his summer holydays with the First Saturday chess event. The tournament was particularly colorful since three continents were represented all bringing in different tactics and style. Three GM-s fought against three FM-s, with the clear domination GM-s this time so not any title norms were achieved.

Grimm Daniel (19, HUN) winner of the IM section almost hit his first IM norm but unfortunately overlooked his queen in a decisive position.

5
FM Grimm Daniel (HUN)

His systematic hard work with coach GM Varga Zoltan (HUN) (former Hungarian Champion three times) will yield its fruit sooner or later. Teh Eu Wen Aron (17, MAS) who achieved outstanding performance in Tromso Chess Olympiad was also close to IM norm and left unbeaten.

Tournament Director Laszlo Nagy (HUN) called internationally by his nickname Mr. First Saturday definitely proved that he is not only a successful organizer but a good chess-player too.

He has been running First Saturday events for 24th years by now. During the rich history of First Saturday series there appeared players he could really learn much from. We can not provide a full list of great players who have participated in First Saturday but let there be just the most famous participants mentioned: World Champions Magnus Carlsen, and Hou Yifan, top GM-s like Leko Peter, Caruana Fabiano, Konery Humpy and many other youth age group world and continental champions who are top GM-s by now.

The development section as usual was a sharp clash of generations. The highest rated player Steer Jozsef (HUN) could hardly prove he is really the best.

9
Steer Jozsef (HUN)

He came first tied with Geher Koppany (11, HUN) a representative of MTK Chess Club Budapest coached by IM Janos Szabolcsi (HUN). The youngest player of the group won near 200 FIDE Rating points. He first met a chess board last January so his relative achievements is definitely a world record.

10

The other bright spot of the event was Onur Cem (13, TUR) from Istanbul who has been to Budapest for First Saturday several times. He won 74 Rating points. His coach is an experienced master from Azerbaijan Dr. Yashar Kerimov living also in Istanbul.
