GM Kovalenko repaeted his victory of last year, Horvath Adam wins the Hungarian Open Championship.

At the XXXIV Zalakaros Chess Festival the Latvian GM Igor Kovalenko finished first defending his last years victory. The Open Hungarian Champion title goes to Horvath Adam, who was only half a point less from the winner of the tournament. Of the 80 players in the A group there 69 were titled, with 27 GMs.

Zalakaros is a pretty little spa town in the Lake Balaton region of Hungary, is an oasis of peace and tranquillity. The 34th edition of the Zalakaros Chess Festival took place from 14 May to 21 May 2015. At the Hotel Karos Spa, in Gala Hall the traditional Festival was held, which determines the Hungarian Open Championship title too. The second highest rated Latvian player, GM Igor Kovalenko repeated his success from last year. Kovalenko started with a loss against IM Kantor Gergely (HUN), a promising talent of Hungarian chess, but in the next 8 games he won 6 drawing two. In the 8th round he defeated the player at first place at the time, GM Avital Boruchovsky (ISR).

In the last game a 122-move draw was fought successfully. He held his position with a rook against Austrian Markus Ragger’s rook and knight. Ragger started with three from three, but in the later rounds only won one game. The Indian Adhiban was left unbeaten.

The Title of Hungarian Champion was won by GM Horvath Adam, player of Zalaegerszeg Csuti-Hydrocomp team. Horvath started with a draw, lost twice, being forced to surrender against Adhiban B. (IND) and against Matthias Bluebaum (GER), with six won games he won the title with 6.5 Pts. On the last day he defeated Ukrainian Olympic champion Zahar Efimenko. He also won 15 Rating points.

After the fifth round GM Papp Gabor (HUN) was tied for the lead, but lost two games. The defending champion GM Berkes Ferenc (HUN) remained unbeaten, but as he could only win 3 games, he did not secure the title.

Members of the Hungarian National Olympic Women's team also played in the Chess Festival. IM (WGM) Vajda Szidonia fought against strong opponents and ended with 4.5 points, (performance 2492), won 18 rating points. IM (WGM) Madl Ildiko also finished with 4.5 points (2385, + 3), WGM Papp Petra finished with 4 (2327, + 7).
