Chandana Wijekoon won the Sri Lanka open Chess Championships after a long battle on the tie breaker after tying with Minul Sanjula Doluweera and RS Dissanayake with 8 ½ points out of possible 10 points. Chandana is one of the long existing player in the Sri Lanka National Chess Championships who is eager in winning a top level event. He played extremely well in the event to earn his 1st ever title. He dragged Rs. 41,600/= Sri Lankan Rupees with the prestigious Sri Lanka open Chess Championship Trophy and the Gold medal. Minul Sanjula Doluweera of Royal College also had excellent performance to share the top spot to share the same amount with the Silver Medal. Ruchira Dissananayake was also playing in the top level who is wanting a top level win from a long time. Though he could not win the title his performance was in higher level to tie on the top spot earning 41,600 Rupees with the Bronze medal.
WIM Sachini Ranasinghe won the Women’s Championships after tying with WFM Anuththara Chandrasiri and Tiumi Yashora with 7 ½ points. Sachini won the women’s Championship Trophy with the Gold medal and Rs. 6666/= while Anuththara won the Bronze medal with the same amount. Tiumi also got the same cash award with the Bronze medal.

The Sri Lanka Open Chess Championships 2014 was conducted by the Chess Federation of Sri Lanka with a cash award of Rs. 400,000/= from 12th to 16th June 2014 at the Magazine reception Hall, Borella. 292 players including 2 players from Singapore participated in this Prestigious event. Osheen De Silva and Chinthaka Mendis Tied for the 4th place and earned Rs. 10,000/= each. Five players, Lakshith Randill, TSS Pieris, AACB Amaratunge, Chinthaka Anuruddha, C Lamahewa got the equal sixth place with 7 ½ points while four others, RS Kalugampitiya, AMB Ekanayake, Marlon Fernando & Jayasanka Perera shared the 11th place.
