Punjab University,s Women won Pakistan Inter-Universities Women Chess Championship 2014 played at Lahore from 13th to 14th June. The University of Lahore and University of Veterinary Sciences stood on 2nd and 3rd positions respectively. The championship was organized by a collaboration of Pakistan University Sports Board and Pakistan Chess Federation. This was a sequel to the Inter-Universities Men Chess Championship previously organized at the University of Agriculture, Faisalabad.
Women Chess teams of eight Universities took part in the event including Islamic University of Bahawalpur and Abdul Wali Khan University, Mardan. Interesting games were displayed in initial rounds played on Round robin system. Punjab University and University of Lahore teams succeeded in reaching the final of the event. In the finals, Punjab University beat the UOL team 2-1 after a tough competition.Punjab University team consisted of Maryam Butt, Nosheen Qaiser, Sidra Kanwal and Arooj Butt. Nosheen Qaiser emerged as the best player of the championship with a perfect score at table 2.
At the prize distribution, Pakistan Chess Federation secretary Dr. Naeem Hamid Mirza expressed his satisfaction over the arrangements by Pakistan University Sports Board. He also took pride in increasing standard of Pakistani women Chess players and assured the women players of increased participation in national and international events. He specially praised the performance of University of Veterinary Sciences team, as this was their first ever participation in a National level Chess competition. Afterwards discussions were also held with Universities Sports Directors and team managers to explore the ways to promote Women Chess and enhance the coordination with Pakistan Chess Federation.
Pakistan Inter-Universities Women Chess Championship was organized as a sequel to the Men Even held earlier.
