The 29th edition of Pakistan,s premier National Chess Championship started in Lahore on Friday 25th April. First round was tranquil for IM Mahmood Lodhi, IM Shahzad Mirza, CM Anwar Qureshi and other National Masters when all of them bagged a point easily to start the campaign.

Things started heating up in 2nd round when Qureshi and Lodhi both escaped narrowly from the jaws of defeat as their young opponents slipped in the later stages after achieving dominant positions, giving both titled players a chance to save their games and grace.

86 Chess players representing all the provincial Chess associations and other departments are participating in the championship. All but 22 players had to qualify for the Nationals through qualifying tournaments and quite interestingly the average age of qualified players has slipped downwards showing increased participation of youth.

The championship will continue till 30th April when selection of Pakistan Chess team will also be announced at the prize distribution ceremony by the Federation,s General Secretary.
