Ravi Theja of India, the highest rated in the event won the 7th Colombo International Chess Championships scoring 8 1/2 points out of possible 9 games convincingly. He only got a draw with GC Anuruddha, one of the most senior Chess Players in Sri Lanka and scored wins in all other 8 games. He earned Rs 60,000/- with the beautiful Trophy and the Gold Medal which was handed over by Mr. Upali Gunasekara, The President of CFSL, the Chief Guest of the Awarding Ceremony. Five players Pradeep Kumar and Ram Aravind of India and GC Anuruddha, Isuru Alahakoon and Chamil Priyankara of Sri Lanka tied for the 2nd place with 7 1/2 points and earned Rs. 16,000/- each. Ravi got the Silver medal and Anuruddha got the bronze on the better tie breaker.
7th Colombo International Chess Championship 2014 was held for the 7th successive year from 13th to 19th February 2014 at Welikada Plaza, Rajagiriya, Sri Lanka with the participation of 400 players from Sri Lanka, India and Maldives.
Chandana Wijekoon, International Master Romesh Weerawardena, FIDE Master TSS Pieris, RS Dissanayake, WCC Perera, Wasanta Wettasinghe, Arun Manukonda, RS Kalugampitiya tied for the 7th place and shared a total cash award of Rs. 30,000/-.
WIM Sachini Ransinghe won the Women's title with the better tie breaker after tying with WFM Manisha Gunaratne with 7 points and earned Rs. 12,500/- each. Sachini got the Women's Championships Trophy with the Gold Medal while Manisha has to satisfy with the Silver Medal. Dilhara Ishini Wickramasinghe, Nisakya Bandara, Yashodha Methmali, Mihirani Jayathilake and Shelani De Silva tied for the 3rd Place with 6 points and Dilhara won the Bronze medal with the better tie breaker.
The organizer, Mr. Luxman Wijesuriya, Hony. Secretary of the Chess Federation of Sri Lanka and the President of Zone 3.2 FIDE thanked everyone for supporting in making the event a success and invited to participate in the 8th edition to be held next year.
