The event was first initiated by the Yunnan Province Sports Bureau and Yunnan Province Education Department in 2011 and which China won by the score of 149 to 43. It was played in 6 categories (Open & Girls U8, U10, U12) with 4 players in each category playing 8 rounds.
The second edition was again hosted by the Chinese in Kunming, Yunnan from 14 to 21 July – just before the World Youth U16 Olympiad. The U8 categories were replaced by with the U14 categories and players played 8 rounds Classical and 8 rounds Blitz. This time, ASEAN was represented by players from Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. ASEAN Chess Academy subsidized the travel expenses of Team ASEAN. The score was 265 to 215 in favour of ASEAN.
From next year onwards, the event will be held on an annual basis; alternating between an ASEAN nation and the Yunnan Province. As the ASEAN Secretariat is based in Jakarta, the ASEAN Chess Confederation has decided to assign Indonesia to play host in 2014.
