The Aegean Trophies to Santorini!

The long tradition according to which the winner of the Aegean Championship comes from Ikaria was eventually broken this year with the male and female Aegean Champions coming both from Santorini!

Panagiotis Frendzas and Eva Kondou, both players of A.S.O. Santorinis and husband and wife in life, prevailed easily over all other contestants this year. It’s worth mentioning that with the help of their children Helektra and Dimitris their family gathered no less than eight (!) cups and medals!

Prize Giving

As every year, the prize giving took place in a very friendly and cozy atmosphere at the Sports Center of Aghios Kirykos in front of 300 visitors and spectators.

The winners of all categories together with the winners of the problem solving contest and the children that took part in the “Chess in Ikaria” painting activity were all presented with their trophies by the mayor of Ikaria Ch. Stavrinadis, the ex-mayor of Aghios Kirykos G. Kritikos and representatives of the Municipality of Ikaria and the Ikarian Cultural Club “Ioannis Melas”.

The ceremony was well organized by the ex-vice-mayor of Aghios Kirykos A. Skaros, the tournament director M. Venios and the arbiter M. Pagali.

Before the prize giving, the organization committee also honored the mayor of Ikaria Ch. Stavrinadis and the ex-mayors of Aghios Kirykos G. Kritikos and Th. Theodorakis (the ex-mayor and one of the founding members of Ikaria Chess Club S. Teskos was not at Ikaria and will be honored in a future occasion) for their permanent and generous support to the International Chess Tournament “Ikaros” and the Ikarian chess in general.

The awards were presented to the mayors by three historical members of Ikaria Chess Club, G. Moraitis (president), N. Xenakis and I. Koukoufikis.

International Chess Tournament “Ikaros 2013” completes its course for this year on 21-22 July with friendly matches between the team of Ikaria Chess Club and teams from St. Petersburg (Russia) and the newly founded chess club “Melissos” from Samos, as well as with a blitz tournament.
