The First Saturday July GM tournament, now traditionally, is offered for the memory of the ingenious Hungarian chess-master Borloy Androvitzky Karoly (1922-2000).

Borloy
Borloy Androvitzky Karoly /HUN/

He was a strong chess master and a surprisingly good poet as well. His rating evaluation system he had worked out before the measuring system of Dr. Elo Arpad Hungarian mathematician was introduced could have deserved more attention of chess officials of his age. His widow Ms. Hedvig Selmeczi is sponsoring the memorial every year.

Mrs Borloy
Mrs Borloy (Selmeczi Hedvig), the sponsor of the tournament visited the event.

The tournament was opened by Mr. Attila Meszaros newly appointed General Secretary of the Hungarian Chess Federation and the event again was visited by the living chess-legend GM Pal Benko (HUN/USA) who is the only player of the world who had defeated the former World Champion Robert James Fischer (USA) three times.

The event was a real breakthrough for IM Blomqvist Erik (SWE, 22 years old) since he achieved his third GM norm that means this precious chess title is going to be awarded to him soon. He showed up a brilliant endgame technique this time and it lifted him up to the greatest success.

The IM section brought an overwhelming Asian success. Jia Haoxiang (CHN, 23) achieved IM norm though it seemed hopeless after losing in the first round.

Jia
Jia, Haoxiang (CHN)

All the Asians were fighting persistently for victory and never compromised with quick draws. Sean Winshand Cuhendi (INA, 15) a young and extremely talented representative of Indonesia could have achieved even more with a little more self-discipline. He is coached permanently by IM-s living in Hungary but despite his hard work his quick success of winning over 80 FIDE rating points within his 40 days stay in Hungary is an unexpectedly great achievement. Li Bo (CHN) is a balanced and exemplarily disciplined player was close to his second IM norm in Hungary within his two months stay.

The return of FM Resika Nathan (USA) to chess battlefields after building up a great career as an opera singer was a double bright spot of the whole event.

Resika
FM Resika, Nathan (USA)

He amused all the participants, spectators and members of the press during the opening ceremony with his harsh but pleasantly sounding tenor. Then he sat at the chess-board and won all his games except for one. Rating gain is a kind of life record of him.
