Palas - Heart of the city
Interview with the President of the Organizing Committee, Sorin Iacoban deputy in the Romanian Parliament
We know that you are a man of sport. Why do you love chess, Mr. Deputy Sorin Iacoban? "I started playing chess at 7 years old since I participated with great interest in school lessons. In addition, my daughter practiced the chess in primary school for four years and she won several national and international medals. I can say that now, after all these years, chess has a direct influence being very good at sciences: mathematics, chemistry, physics. "
What does it mean for Romania to organize the World Amateur Chess Championships? "It's a special event. Completes the World School Chess Championship 2012, with 503 children from 40 countries - and brings a very good image to Iasi and Romania. However, we have to find the financial resources for a better organization, to mobilize all local authorities as well as major sponsors for the smooth running of the competition. At the same time we aim to promote the event in local and national media and to have a very good relationship with the participants from all over the world. "
How do you see the development of chess in Romania? "Iasi is the border city of European Union, in a region where chess is developed. Thus, it appears that interest has spread in our town and I think it has very good future: nearly all schools and kindergartens from Iasi has chess lessons, Iasi students are attracted each year to chess and we must recognize that in Iasi parks chess is representative sport. This movement we want to develop over the country, to support where needed, to start where interest is low. "
Which are Romania’s qualities for organizing such continental and world events? "Iasi is full of history, the cultural capital of the country. Who discovered Iasi actually discover a lot of Romanian history. National events were held in Iasi. Moreover, chess in Iasi found a great opening: Iasi City Hall by Mayor Gheorghe Nichita, a man of sport, increasingly supported chess, and this development was spectacular. Every year over 4,000 children learn chess, more chess programs and projects are taking place each year. Coaches and instructors make an outstanding work, with very good results, putting value on organization, dedicated to their work. Our city has had the honor to be declared European City of Sport in 2012 when it was organized in Iasi World School Chess Championship. "
What do you want to say to the participants of World Amateur Chess Championships? "Welcome! We are very pleased to come and visit us! To enjoy special conditions provided by the organizers and to return to Iasi whenever they can, not necessarily because of chess competitions. Thanks to chess and those who agreed to compete in international tournaments - the European Youth Team Championship 2011, World School Chess Championship 2012, World Amateur Chess Championship 2013, the European Youth Team Championship 2014 - Iasi and Romania become a default point on the Global chess map and we hope to be known through sport, performances and achievements.
Interview with the Vicepresident of the Organizing Committee, Ion Serban Dobronauteanu, ECU Vicepresident
Why do you love chess, Mr Ion Serban Dobronauteanu, ECU Vicepresident? Chess was present in my family since my early days, my father used to play chess when I was young, later he became a trainer. In my family this hobby came from my grand-father, he taught it to my father and my uncle.
What does it mean for Romania to organize the World Amateur Chess Championships? Such an event for our country is of extreme importance. What is even better, is that this World Championship comes after another world competition: World School Chess Championship also organized last year in Iasi, and the participation records to these events make of Romania a major organizer on the international level.
How do you see the future of chess in Romania? There’s a lot to be done. But I can put it this way: in my opinion, the raise of chess popularity and increase of players number with ages comprised between 7-14 are our first objectives. What has happened in the past years in our country makes me quite optimistic.
Which are Romania’s qualities for organizing such continental and world events? Very good conditions of organization, (playing halls, accommodation services,) at very good prices and a group of professional competition organizers.
What do you want to say to the participants of World Amateur Chess Championships? Welcome to Romania, may they have a wonderful competition and be glad of our city hospitality, Iasi! I am convinced that this competition will represent for Romania a key for promoting it on the world level.
