Zone 4.1 Championships have taken place in Nouakchott, the capital of Mauritania from March 28 to April 05, 2013 It is to notice with great pleasure that all the Federations of the Zone participated to the Event.
Regretfully however, participation to the Women section was not up to the Championship as only 3 Federations were represented, namely Algeria, Tunisia and Mauritania.
Participation of Mali has been very much appreciated in spite of the crisis being experienced by the country. The Zone Title of the Open section was won by the talented Ali Sebar from Morrocco, who from the beginning proved very strong and showed his ability to dominate his opponents.
As to the Women section, the three players from Algeria took the first place with allmost no challenge to them. Latreche Khadidja however took the Title on tie-break.
The continental President for Africa, Lakhdar Mazouz, visited Mauritania at the start of the Championships. He took opportunity of the Zonal to discuss chess matters with Dr. Abdallhi Ould Mohamed Elmokhtar Ould BAH, Predident of Mauritania Chess Federation and with Mr. Ousmane DIAKITE, President of Mali Chess federation.
Another highlight was the meeting with Mrs Cisse, Mint Boyda Mauritania Minister Of Culture, Youth and Sports in the presence of all the Chief Delegates of the federations and the Continental President. The Minister did emphazise her readiness to support Chess activities in Mauritania and was very much interested by the possibility of entering chess into schools.
On the whole, the Championships were very successful, thanks to the Federation of Mauritania and its sponsors: (Winsevices; MCM Mauritania; Kinross Tasiast Mauritania).
