Lu Shanglei stuns Aleksandrov, Kumaran holds two Grandmasters
Chinese Grandmaster Lu Shanglei shared the lead with 5.5 points after the sixth round in the Chennai Super Kings 5th International Grandmaster chess tournament 2013 at Media Hall, Nehru Stadium, Chennai here today. Sharing the lead with Lu Shanglei were GMs Teske Henrik (Germany) and M R Lalith Babu (India). Further half a point down at 5.0 points were GMs Aleksej Aleksandrov (Belarus), Adhiban Baskaran (India), Czebe Attila (Hungary) among others.
Earlier, the morning session saw both the top seeds going down to lower rated GMs. Chinese Grandmaster Lu Shanglei scored over top seed GM Aleksej Aleksandrov of Belarus, while the second seed GM Deviatkin Andrei (Russia) lost to GM Teske Henrik (Germany), when he slipped from an apparently equal position.
14-year-old Chennai lad B Kumaran, a 9th Standard student of Sri Sankara Senior Secondary School, Adyar, Chennai was impressive as he held two Grandmasters to draw on a double round day. Playing with black pieces Kumaran drew with GM Niaz Murshed (Bangladesh) in the morning session and held GM Ziatdinov Raset of USA to a draw in the evening session. Kumaran has played two IMs and two GMs in the last four rounds securing a 3/4 score. Having missed his IM Norm narrowly in the recently concluded Commonwealth championship, in-form Kumaran is bound to make up this event as his show.
In another upset, 15-year-old Chennai lad N R Vignesh scored over experienced Uzbek Grandmaster Kayumov Dmitry in a Sicilian game that lasted 37 moves. Showing understanding ahead of his age, Vignesh handled the middle game with elan and marched to win in a rook and pawn end game.
