Three IM norms at First Saturday Budapest November events Print

There was an unusual GM and an extraordinary IM tournament accompanied with another three rating sections played this month in the Hotel MEDOSZ Budapest.

The GM section consisted of 7 players double-rounds which meant three double rounds completed within 11 days. The GMs all brought their expected performances so there was not much left for the candidates.

However, former U10 European Champion (U10 Fermo, ITA 2009) now thirteen years old FIDE-Master, Gledura Benjamin (HUN) has taken the maximum possible. He achieved his first IM norm playing carefully in positional style never taking too much risk. His outstanding performance is not a surprise at all since he was silver medalist at Caldas Novas (BRA) U12 World Championship in 2011 and just recently he was the best scorer (6 points of 7 games) of the Hungarian team at the European U 18 Youth Team Championsip in Pardubice (CZE). He is four times HUN Champion in U 10 and U12 age groups. Furthermore he was the winner of a strong U 16 International Tournament in Gibraltar in August 2012.

IGM SZABO, Krisztian (HUN), winner of the GM-group

The IM section was extraordinary by another point of view. There were 10 federations represented in a 12 member group so it was international indeed. No-one has ever won over 60 Rating points during First Saturday history (over 20 years) like Liu Guanchu (CHN) did this time. He performed his fourth IM norm so he needs only the 2400 rating requirement fulfilled for his IM-Title.

Liu, Guanchu (CHN)

FM Massoni Michael (FRA) of Bastia champion of the island of Corsica performed his third IM norm after round 9 performing the 2400 requirement in R10 suffered his only loss in the last round. He played in fierce sharp style so it was always difficult to find out his next move. His great daily practical experience brought its fruit since he is a professional chess teacher and coach in Corsica.

Another bright spot of the event was Aryan Chopra (IND). He is only 11 years old yet and it was his second try in Budapest. Collecting nearly 50 rating points in such a strong field was another extraordinary achievement for his age. Players with decades of experience lost the battle against talented young.
