Viman Bhagya from Sri Lanka wins 3rd BUDDHI International 2012 Print

Sri Lankan player, Viman Bhagya grabbed the 3rd BUDDHI International championship convincingly scoring with 8.5 points out of 9 games. He, the one top seed in the event with ELO of 1965 had only a draw against G.C. Anurudha of Sri Lanaka national team player in throughout the event. Viman received 60,000/= with the beautiful BUDDHI International trophy & gold medal.

The 3rd BUDDHI International Open Rating Chess Tournament which was organized by the Buddhi School of chess on behalf of the chess federation of Sri Lanka & FIDE was a great success with 250 players participating with German & Maldives players. The tournament was held from 3rd to 7th October 2012 at Linrose Hotel, Gampaha on Swiss system over 9 rounds with a prize fund around LKR 300,000/=. National Youth Services Council of Sri Lanka has supported the Buddhi School of chess in making the event a success.

Isuru Alahakoon, the National champion of Sri Lanka became 1st runner up with 8 points to win the silver medal & LKR 40,000/= while C.K.D Fonseka also from Hatton National Bank, Sri Lanka won the bronze medal with 7.5 points. G. C Anurudha (SL Navy) and Bernd Daverkausen (German) scored 7.5 points each & tied with C.K.D. Fonseka in the 3rd spot & share a total of 40,000/= among them.

WIM Schini Ranasinghe, SL women’s National Champion from Museus College bagged the Women’s Championship of the BUDDHI international for the 3rd consecutive year. She scored 7 points to get the gold medal and the trophy with LKR 10,000/=. Mihirani Jayathilake was 2nd to earn the silver medal with 6,000/=, while the Binudi Senarath Yapa of Visakha Vidyalaya won the 3rd place to get the bronze medal with LKR 4,000/=.

The awarding ceremony was held at Linrose Hotel under the patronage of Mr. Eranga Senanayake, the Mayor of Gampaha as the chief guest while Mr. Luxman Wijesuriya Secretary, CFSL & President Zone 3.2, FIDE and Mrs. Suneetha Wijesuriya, a gold medalist at the 30th Chess Olympiad 1992 from Sri Lanka as the guest of Honor with Miss Buddhi Panagoda, the organizer of the event.
