GM Bogdan Lalic in best form again at First Saturday Budapest GM Tournament 01-10th September 2012 |

The experienced Croatian Grandmaster last won a GM tournament at the zenith of his career in 1996 winning Hastings GM defeating leading English GM-s. This year he feels to reach the same strength again. After winning an extremely strong rapid tournament at Pardubicze(CZE) he was unstoppable in Budapest too. He won convincingly and was the only player who could remain undefeated. No player could achieve any Title-norms this time but Ashwin Jarayam (IND) and Toth Ervin (HUN) were the closest to it.

The IM section lined up as many as seven IM-s who left no room for the candidates to hit the IM norm. As the odds showed they occupied the first seven places. The winner IM Nguyen Huynh Minh Huy (VIE) played close to GM level while IM Sandor Farago (HUN) could have come clear first with a little more luck.

The most experienced adult player Juracsik Jozsef (HUN) won the upper level Rating tournament. He is a First Saturday expert since he has won his group for the fifth time now. This section is a useful school for the most talented young who come up increasing their ratings combining it with heavy training facing very good practical players month by month here. Former U 8 European Champion (Albena 2011) FM Krstulovic Alex (HUN) who celebrated his 9th birthday during the tournament collected 38 while Bohus Adam (HUN, age 12) 40 FIDE-rating points this time.

The lowest rating group brought the victory of the only FM of the group Mayer Istvan (HUN) who made an exhibition of higher standard chess. Lukacs Albert (HUN) who is the computer expert of the First Saturday staff is gradually increasing his FIDE-Rating points month by month. Gruz Janos (HUN) who is a carpenter and upholsterer in civilian life, came to play after hard work every day showing up uncompromising attitude, well deserved the symbolic bronze medal.

Home of the tournament as usual was the freshly renewed air-conditioned Conference Hall of the Hotel MEDOSZ which is situated in the center of Budapest. Laszlo Nagy Tournament Director has signed a contract with the hotel management for another year so the successful international tournament series will continue in 2013 as well, month by month except for January.
