Gata Kamsky wins the inaugural Washington International |

The inaugural Washington International was held from 28th July to 1st August at Rockville Hilton in Rockville, Maryland. The 9-round swiss tournament was open for the players rated above 2100 FIDE.
Gata Kamsky won the tournament with a final score of 7 points, taking home the first place prize of $5000.
Going into the last round, Kamsky was tied for first with Alex Onischuk and Timur Gareev. All three players had already played each other, leading to pairings with the lower score group. Onischuk and Gareev were only able to draw with Sergei Azarov and Tamaz Gelashvili respectively. But Kamsky won his last round game against Joel Benjamin and claimed sole first place.
Alexander Shabalov won his last round game against Mikheil Kekelidze to join Onischuk and Gareev in a tie for second. Each of these three won $2000.
In Round 3, most of the GMs won except for the big upset when World U-8 Champion Awonder Liang defeated local GM Larry Kaufman.
The organizer provided sets, boards, and clocks, as well as free Continental breakfast for players every morning.
