Festival news
The 23th International Chess and Games Festival CZECH OPEN started on July 12th. The first tournament on schedule was the European Youth Team Championship. The total number of players consisted of ten four-member boys’ teams from the Croatia, Hungary, Romania, Russia (Yamal), Slovenia, Poland and two teams from Germany and Czech Republic (official Czech Republic team and team from Ricany), and nine two-member girls’ teams from the Hungary, Poland, Slovenia, Romania, Germany, two from Russia and two from Czech Republic. The categories played the round-robin tournament format in nine rounds, in the girls tournament every day one team was pausing, since the total number of their teams was even.
In position of a favourites among the boys were the Polish boys, who came into Pardubice with two chess international masters and one Fide Master, the second-seeded team were the Hungarians, the third-seeded were the A team from Germany. In the girls’ part of the tournament, the favourites were similar – Poland, Hungary and most strong team from Russia I, with Goryachkina, IM Baraeva and FM Baraeva.
Favourites were really well-prepared, because they confirmed their starting positions and all of them get medals.

The best performances on boards showed Polish boys – IM Dragun Kamil (first board), IM Sadzikowski Daniel (third board), FM Drozdowski Kacper (fourth board). Only on the second board was the best player from Germany A – FM Schroeder Jan-Christian.

Best performance on the first board (5 points from 8 games) had Jana Zpevakova from B team of Czech Republic, which was really surprising. Best player on the second board was Klaudila Wisniowska from Poland.
The OCÉ OPEN – Czech Republic Open Championship of four-member teams has also started at the weekend. After registering all the teams their total number equaled 103, making this tournament the one with the highest number of participants in the year of the Festival. Gold medals went to Dnepr from Ukraine; in the team was also GM Dmitry Kononenko, who won the main tournament Pardubice Open last year. Republic champion was Zikuda Turnov A and this was their third time as winners.
The first weekend of the event was traditionally dedicated to games. There are tournaments in various disciplines, such as Rubik’s cube, Scrabble, Renju, Gomoku, Mancala, Pokémon, Magic:the Gathering, Go and many others. The most popular among the spectators is definitely the tournament in assembling the Rubik’s cube. Three years ago, the new world record in assembling the 3x3 cube was established in Pardubice, when Erik Akkersdijk accomplished it in 7.08 seconds. World records were broken also this year, one by competitors from Japan – Tomoaki Okayama won in the fewest moves discipline. His record is 20 moves. Marcell Endrey from Hungary managed to assemble the Rubik’s cube 4x4x4x blindfolded in 2:48.88.
After the weekend, the other chess tournaments were proceeding. Bughouse, blitz chess, superblitz and blitz marathon. The most star-studded event was the Fischerrandom chess tournament with GM Navara David (2679), GM Buhmann Rainer (2571) and many others. Another star-studded tournament will be the two-day rapid-chess tournament VLASTIMIL LOUCEK OPEN. In the same time two European Amateurs Championships take place in CEZ Arena – EUROKOMPLEX AUTOSKAL OPEN (for player with ELO < 2000) and DOPRAVNI STAVBY BRNO OPEN (for players with ELO < 1800).
Czech Open Festival draws to a phase, when the competitors taking part in the main tournaments meet in the ČEZ Arena. These tournaments will begin on 20th July and continue up to the 29th July.
