Fabiano Caruana defeated Vladimir Kramnik in the 8th round of the Tal Memorial and assumed the top position in the tournament with one round to go. This was the second consecutive loss for Kramnik who slipped down in the standings.
Another earlier leader, Alexander Morozevich, continued the string of bad results and lost the third game in a row, this time with white against Luke McShane.
Alexander Grischuk beat Hikaru Nakamura, Carlsen - Tomashevsky and Radjabov - Aronian were drawn.
