GM Ni Hua of China beat Yuriy Kuzubov of Ukraine to win the Dubai Open Chess Championship at the Dubai Chess Club in Dubai. Ni Hua tallied 7 points, in a tie with four others, but prevailed with better tie break points to take home the Sheikh Rashid Bin Hamdan Al Maktoum Cup. Also finishing with 7 points each were GMs Baadur Jobava and Mikheil Mchedlishvili of Georgia, Normunds Miezis of Latvia and Chanda Sandipan of India

Ni Hua crushed the Sicilian defense of Kuzubov in 62 moves. Jobava used the King’s Indian Defense and sacrificed the exchange on the 27th move with Rook for Bishop. With three pieces he weaved a mating net in the middle of the board and forced resignation on the 50th move.

Mchedlishvili smashed the Benoni defense of Loek Van Wely of The Netherlands in 46 moves.

Miezis and Sandipan were leading going into the last round but drew their game and allowed the others to catch up for the lion’s share of the cash prizes.

Ten players tied with 6.5 points apiece taking home $1,370 each, namely Armenian GMs Vladimir Akopian, Tigran L. Petrosian, Zaven Andriasian and Robert Hovhannnisyan, Evgenij Miroshnichenko of Ukraine, Sergey Volkov of Russia, Zhou Weiqi of China, Ivan Sokolov of The Netherlands and Indian GMs Abhijeet Gupta and International Master Sunday Shiyam, the only non-GM among the prize winners.

Best women were WGM Mariya Sergeyeva of Kazakhstan with 6 points, IM Sopiko Khukhashvili of Georgia with 5.5 points and 5-pointers Tania Sachdev of India, Wlmira Mirzoeva of Russia, Shayesteh Ghader Pour of Iran, Marina Makropoulou of Greece and Lorena Zepeda of El Salvador.

Best Arab players were IM Mohamed Ezat and GM Bassem Amin of Egypt and IM Basheer Al Qudaimi of Yemen with 5.5 ponts each.

Best UAE men were FM Moussa Othman and Anwar Walid with 5 points each and Abdulwahab Abdulla with 4.5 points and Mohd Al Taher and Abdulwahib Marwan with 4 points each. Best UAE women were Mozah Al-Moaamari and Khalil Bashaer with 2 points each.

Best Dubai men were Candidate Master Nagueb Saleh, Ali Abdulla and Naif Saleh with 4 points each. Best Dubai woman was Aysha Jehad with 2 points.
