World Chess Federation (FIDE), the Romanian Chess Federation, International School Chess Union, Iasi County Chess Association, proudly organize, from April 28 to May 6, 2012, in Iasi – Romania, the 8th World School Chess Championship. The event will be held under the patronage of Mayor of Iasi - Nichita Gheorghe, a friend of chess and sports. As a recognition of it’s contribution in developing of sport, the city of Iasi was awarded with the title of the European City of Sport in 2012, World School Chess Championship was an important factor in taking the decision of the European Parliament.

About Iasi


Who wants to visit or to find Iasi will come here as a huge gate of Romanian history. In Iasi "every stone speaks of the past", the large number of christian monasteries, museums, memorial houses. Therefore, we can say that Iasi is a true national museum, the art treasures of history and it has.

Iasi offers a unique image in its location. Located in northeastern Romania at 47 north latitude and 27 east longitude, it covers seven gentle hills, like Rome also. It has a population of 350,000 inhabitants. The city enjoys a temperate continental climate, with hot summers and cold winters, the average temperature in winter down to -10 C.

Iasi County Chess Association is the most active chess organization in Romania. In support of this statement will note the following aspects of chess movement in Iasi:

Iasi County Chess Association organized a very large selection basis, with many chess projects: "Chess in the Kindergartens" in 45 kindergartens (aprox. 2500 children every year); "Chess in Schools" organize chess clubs in 25 schools in Iasi (2500 children); "Chess in neighborhoods” - 500 chess enthusiasts play 2 times in a year in neighborhoods, outdoor; chess simultaneous "Iasi 600” - over 600 people participated on Stefan cel Mare Boulevard; many editions of National Team Championship for children; EUROPEAN YOUTH TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP and ECU Board in 2012; 27 editions of the International Chess Festival "M. Sadoveanu "Iasi - one of the most important chess events in Romania; our children won, during 1996-2009, 293 national medals and 48 international medals; the latest result is winning the championship title with the Politehnica Iasi Chess Club women team.
