55 players from seven countries gathered for the 28th Budapest Spring Festival (26th March – 3rd April) that took place at the pleasantly renewed MEDOSZ Hotel in Budapest. IM Galyas Miklos (HUN) won this traditional event for the fourth occasion. He called it as his favorite tournament.

Victory did not come easy since Varga Klara (HUN) who already has an IM norm of man was leading before the last round only half a point away for the desired WGM norm that remained a dream for the time being.

The greatest surprise however was delivered by a 16 year old Indian boy Padhya Saumil who presented extraordinarily mature play for his age proving that he is much better than one could expect by his relatively low rating.

The youngest foreign participant Aryan Chopra (10) came also from India and scored 3.5 points winning 16 FIDE-rating points against quite experienced adult opponents.

The tournament mustered up a number of young talents besides 14 titled players. The youth showed up surprisingly advanced skills and leapfrogged a lot of titled players. Varga Melinda (HUN) present Hungarian U 20 champion would have deserved a higher final rank by the quality of her games while Wang Xinyue (CHN) won a record number (over 40) of rating points.

The success of the event that went on in a fair and friendly spirit may inspire IO Nagy Laszlo to organize more
