sergei_zhigalkoThe 78th Belarus Chess Championship was held from 11th to 22nd January in Minsk. Twelve players competed in the round robin tournament.

The top-seeded GM Sergei Zhigalko took a clear first place and claimed the title with 8 points from 11 games. Second ih his brother Andrey Zhigalko who edged the young Vladislav Kovalev on better tie-break.

Kovalev narrowly missed the Grandmaster norm by only half a point but he won the IM norm.

Final standings:

1. GM Zhigalko Sergei 2658 - 8.0
2-3. GM Zhigalko Andrey 2576 and FM Kovalev Vladislav 2453 - 7.5
4-5. GM Stupak Kirill 2515 and GM Fedorov Alexei 2579 - 7.0
6. IM Gorovets Andrey 2428 - 5.5
7-8. GM Teterev Vitaly 2538 and FM Bulanov Dmitri 2387 - 4.5
9. Kocheev Aleksandr 2353 - 4.0
10-12. FM Grib Roman 2303, IM Lomako Pavel 2385 and Zhuck Sergei 2341 - 3.5
