Magnus Carlsen Wins Tal Memorial Print

Magnus Carlsen pulled an all-important last round victory with black against Hikaru Nakamura to take the winner’s trophy at the 6th Mikhail Tal Memorial in Moscow. Carlsen shared the first place with Levon Aronian but had a better tie-break due to more games with black pieces.

Aronian entered the final round as a sole leader, but he had to play with black against the inspired attacker Ian Nepomniachtchi. Indeed, Nepomniachtchi sacrificed an exchange and gained a long-term pressure. Aronian was on the defending side for more than 60 moves but he managed to obtain a draw and repeat the success from 2006 and 2010 when he also shared the first place.

In the other games of the last round, Peter Svidler defeated Vladimir Kramnik, while Karjakin – Ivanchuk and Gelfand – Anand were drawn.

Anand, Carlsen, Aronian, Kramnik and Nakamura continue the tour with the 3rd London Chess Classic starting next Saturday.

Final standings:
1-2. Carlsen Magnus NOR 2826 and Aronian Levon ARM 2802 – 5½
3-5. Karjakin Sergey RUS 2763, Nepomniachtchi Ian RUS 2730 and Ivanchuk Vassily UKR 2775 – 5.0
6-7. Anand Viswanathan IND 2811 and Svidler Peter RUS 2755 – 4½
8. Kramnik Vladimir RUS 2800 and Gelfand Boris ISR 2744 – 3½
10. Nakamura Hikaru USA 2758 – 3.0
