Vietnam won gold medals in both the Men's and Women's Rapid Chess Championship in the Southeast Asian Game in Palembang, Indonesia. One more round of the standard chess tournament is scheduled followed by the blitz tournament. See chess-results.com for results and standings. GM Le Quang Liem of Vietnam scored 8 points in the 9-round Swiss for the gold medal followed by FM Hamdani Rudin of Indonesia who registered 7 points for the silver medal. GM Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son of Vietnam won the bronze medal with 6 points Indonesian FM Kasmiran (2350) upset Truong Son ((2662) in the last round to prevent a tie for third place.
WGM Pham Le Thao Nguyen of Vietnam scored 8.5 points out of 9 rounds for the gold medal followed by compatriot WGM Hoang Thi Bao Tram with 7 points for the silver medal. WIM Catherine Perena of the Philippines finished with 5.5 points for the silver medal. Perena prevailed in the tie break, having earlier beaten Indonesian WIM Sihite Chelsie Monica who also finished with 5.5 points.
In the Standard chess competition, GM Susanto Megaranto drew with Malaysian IM Jimmy Liew to remain in solo lead with 3.5 points out of four games. Megaranto faces FM Kyaw Lin Naing (2334) of Myanmar in the last round. GM Wesley So of the Philippines beat FM Teerapabpaisit Wisuwat of Thailand to remain within striking distance at 3 points. GM Cao Sang of Vietnam and FM Kyaw of Myanmar are tied at 2.5 points each in the race for the bronze medal.
In Women's Standard Chess, WFM Jose Rulp Ylem of the Philippines drew with second running WIM Nguyen Thi Mai Hung of Vietnam to retain solo lead with 3 points. out of 4 games. However, the Vietnamese has one game left to play agains scoreless Isawan Srijomtong of Thailand and is set to force a sudden death playoff.
