India-flagNew Delhi (02 Oct 11) :-  25th National Under-13 Open and Girls Chess Championships got off to a surprising start as third seed and World Youth Under-12 Girls bronze medalist M Mahalakshmi of Tamilnadu was stunned by lower seed Radhika Garg of Uttarpradesh in the first round match of the girl’s category here at Kulachi Hansraj Model School, Ashok Vihar on Sunday.

A total number of 198 players in Open and 102 in girls section from across the country are participating in this prestigious championships.  In the open section, all the seeded players sailed smoothly to the second round with full point in their kitty.

Top seed Aravindh Chithambaram V R of Tamilnadu, who become the National Junior Champion recently, started his campaign with an easy outing against local lad Swayam Bhatia while second seed and former Commonwealth Under-12 gold medalist Sidhant Mohapatra of Orissa also started his championship campaign with a bang as he overcame his rival Kabyanil Talukdar of Assam without much struggle.

In a surprising result in the open section, Delhi lad Om Batra held World Under-10 bronze medalist Abhimanyu Puranik of Maharashtra to a creditable draw in the opening round.

Meanwhile in the girls’ category, top seed and World Under-12 Girls silver medalist Ivana Maria Furtado stated her championship proceedings in style as she overpowered her Maharashtra rival Urja Shah in the first round encounter.

Second Monnisha G K of Tamilnadu also started the championship in winning note with a comfortable victory over Sharvi Goel of Delhi.  In another surprising result in the girls’ section, lower rated Harshita Guddanti of Andhrapradesh shocked fifth seed Rutuja Bakshi of Maharashtra.

Earlier Shri. Hari Shanker Gupta, MLA inaugurated the championship in presence of Shri. Bharat Singh Chauhan, Secretary All India Chess Federation by making the customary first move.

Second round of the 11 round Swiss system championship is underway at the time of report.
