At the end of 9th round of 4th Mayor’s Cup International Chess Tournament 2011 organised by Venus Chess Academy co-sponsored by LIC and hosted by Goregaon Sports Club, Aleksandrov Aleksej (ELO 2618) of Belarus is leading with 8 points followed IM M S ThejKumar (ELO 2450) with 7.5 points whereas 6 players are on 7 points.

On the first board the top seed and yesterday’s leader Aleksandrov playing with white started the game in Slav defence against GM S P Sethuraman (ELO 2529). The game was slight better for white but after exchange of  Queens the game was equally poised. After exchanging the Rooks, the bishop verses Kinght endgame both got a passed pawn. But Aleksej sacrificed his bishop to get his queen on board and never allowed Sethuraman to do the same. Thus winning in 59 moves.

IM Prasanna Rao (ELO 2418) missed the chance of his GM norm today as he lost to GM Dzhumaev Marat (ELO 2492), in the Scotch Game. In the middle game Marat aggressively attack Rao’s King with his Rook Knight and Queen forcing him to resign after 26 move when loss of Queen was eminent.

The game between Thejkumar and IM K Ranthnakaran ( ELO 2386) started with King’s Indian Defense. On 15th move Thejkumar who was having slight advantage won a pawn. He has done the same thing on move 19 and won an exchange on 22 move. On 29th move realizing a loss of another piece Rathnakaran accepted his defeat.   opted for With the exception of IM Prasanna Rao (ELO 2418) and IM Thejkumar M S (ELO 2450) all the games on the top boards ended in draws.

While on the 2nd table GM Abhijit Kunte (ELO 2528) and GM Martyn Kravtsiv (ELO 2583) agreed for a quick draw in 16 moves.

IM P Shyam Nikhil made his maiden GM norm by defeating GM Heberla Bartlomiej (ELO 2539) of Poland. Ankit Rajpara and Navin Kanna made their maiden IM norms.
