The Sri Lanka National A Chess Championships and Sri Lanka Women's National Chess Championships are scheduled to be played at the University of Moratuwa from 17th to 26th September 2011 in a grand manner. The Sri Lanka National Chess Championship, the most prestigious Chess event in Sri Lanka was officially inaugurated in 1972. Mr. Christoper Parakrama was the 1st official National Chess Champion in Sri-Lanka.

According to the current system, 4 players, Athula Russell being the regning National Chess Champion and FIDE Masters Harsha and Harinlal Athurupane (Brothers) and Sunil Weeramantry are eligible to play the National Chess Championship directly. But, all of them are not available this year. So, 14 players, Prasanna Kurukulasuriya (Paul Morphy Chess Club), RS Kalugampitiya (Fisher Chess Club), Romesh Weerawardena (Paul Morphy Chess Club), WCC Perera (Trinity College), Yasas Lamawansa (Trinity College), Chandana Wijekoon (Sri Lanka Navy), GC Anuruddha (Sri Lanka Navy), WSVK Koggala (University of Moratuwa), Udit Jayasundara (Nalanda College), YDB Madugalle (Uva Wellassa University), Gihan Kanchana De Silva (Reborn Chess Club), Wiman Bhagya (Nf3 Chess Club), PD Senanayake and Ruchira Dissanayake (both from Fisher Chess Club), Ananthan, Gas Dissanayake, Chandana Gunathilake, Harsha and Harinlal Aturupane brothers, TDR Pieris, Ishan Weerakoon, Luxman Wijesuriya, Ruchira Amarasinghe, Muditha Hettigama, Nirosh De Silva, and GC Anuruddha had won the National Chess Championships during last 38 years. Only GC Anuruddha is in the final 14 this year. The Inaugural Women's National Chess Championships 2011 where Anoja Seneviratne became the 1st Women's National Chess Champion. Suneetha and Vineetha Wijesuriya Sisters has kept the Women's National Chess Championship title more than 20 years. Amarangi De Silva, Malintha Fernando, UGY Methmali, Pramodya Senanayake, Sachini Ranasinghe and reigning Champion, Dinushki Premanath are among the Women's National Champions during last 31 years.

Four players, Women International Master, Sachini Ranasinghe and four FIDE Masters, Dinushki Premanath, Pramodya Senanayake, Supeshala Thilakawardena and Nirmala Chandrasiri are directly qualified to play the National Women's Championships this year. Four of them are playing except Nirmala Chandrasiri. So, 10 players, Naduni Abeywardena, Tiumi Yashora, Thilini Koswatte, LN Rajapaksha, UGY Methmali, Nelumika Methmani, Sashiprbha Gimhani, Anuththara Chandrasiri, Panchali Perera and SP Sathya are selected from the Women's National B Chess Championships 2011.

The Women's tournament is going to be a most strongest with 4 title players and four players who have become National Chess Champion before.

The both event will be held on Round robin system with 13 rounds. The winners will be the National Chess Champion and National Women's Chess Champions respectively for the year 2011. The Chess Federation is offering a total of Rs. 150,000/- cash award for the winners of the National Championships Cycle. The awarding ceremony will be held held on 26th of September 2011 at 7.00 p.m. at the venue. All of you are requested to witness the event at University of Moratuwa on 17th, 18th, 19th 23rd, 24th, 25th and 26th at the University of Moratuwa.
