On the occasion of the 20th Anniversary Commemorative Activity of China-ASEAN Dialogue Relations, the South-Western Province of Yunnan organized the China-ASEAN Junior Chess Classic in the city of Kunming from 22 to 28 August.
The match was played in 6 categories of U8, U10, U12 (Boys and Girls) with 4 players per team in a double-round Scheveningen System. China was represented by most of its top 4 players selected from the Chinese National Youth Championships. ASEAN players were selected from the ASEAN Age-Group Championships. Unfortunately, as Vietnam had a prior domestic event, its players were all substituted.
Led by some world champions, China won the match convincingly 149 to 43. ASEAN players were represented by Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines and Singapore. Officials from the Chinese Chess Association and the Yunnan Provincial Department for Culture, Sports & Tourism have agreed to organize this event on a larger scale next year. Following this, the event will alternate between Yunnan and an ASEAN nation every other year.
The ASEAN Chess Confederation comprises Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Thailand, Singapore and Vietnam. Efforts will be made to ensure that every member nation will be represented in subsequent events.
