Nagpur (21 Aug 11) :- Amravati based International Master Swapnil Dhopade produced a contrasting victory over state mate Akshayraj Kore in the eighth round to join International Master Shyam Nikil at top of point table with seven points in the ongoing 4th Air Marshal Subroto Mukerjee Memorial Fide Rated Chess Tournament here at Naivedhyam Hall on Sunday.
Playing black side of exchange variation of Caro-Kann defence, Dhopade had shown great skills in the rook and pawn ending to secure full point in 54 moves. This crucial victory enabled Dhopade to catch up with leader Shyam Nikil in the pole position of point table. Meanwhile playing safe with white pieces in Scheveningen variation of Sicilian defence, Shyam Nikil settled for half point against International Master S Satyapragyan in the eighth round match that lasted just 14 moves.
Meanwhile top seed Grandmaster R R Laxman suffered another shock defeat in the tourney by the hands of Chennai based BSNL employee Ram S Krishnan. Playing white side of Black Knight’s Tango (Mexican Defence), Laxman blundered in the opening itself to lose the initiative and handed over full point to his lower rated rival in 61 moves.
In other eighth round encounters, third seed Himanshu Sharma of Haryana defeated Shashikant Kutwal of Railways while defending champion International Master Rathnakaran escaped from the claws of defeat to beat Himal Gusain of Chandigarh.
At the end of eighth round, eleven players including International Masters Anwesh Upadhyaya of Orissa, P Karthikeyan of Tamilnadu and Murali Krishnan B T of Railways are occupying the joint second spot with six and half points. Karthikeyan beat first edition winner International Master Rahul Shetty of Air India while Murali and Anwesh got better off Vikramditya Sahu of Maharashtra and Chandrashekhar Gokhale of Air India respectively in the eighth round battles.
Penultimate round of this four lakh prize money tournament organized by Maintenance Command, Indian Air Force and sponsored by Oil and Natural Gas Corporation and co-sponsored by Indian Oil Corporation, State Bank of India and Life Insurance Corporation will start at 0900 am on Monday.
