IM Janos Szabolcsi closest to GM norm at First Saturday Budapest 6-15th August events Print
Friday, 19 August 2011 06:36
First_saturday_logo

Record number of groups (7) had to be created of the 58 participants registered for this month First Saturday events. The increasing interest may be a result of the pleasant playing conditions the MEDOSZ Hotel offers in the centre of Budapest. Four continents were represented.
IM Janos Szabolcsi a teacher of French language almost hit the GM norm. He had the upper hand in his last two games too against Armenian rivals but he failed to win those promising positions so a lifetime dream faded this time but hopefully not forever. The experienced IM and chess coach would have deserved it since he showed up his best play in his life as he said.

There were two IM groups and a 16 year old Hungarian talent, Horvath David (HUN) performed his first IM norm. His trainer FM Laszlo Szollosi (HUN) proved that there is no need to be a top GM to achieve success as a coach.

There were four sections for FIDE-ratings too, divided by rating levels.
FM-A group winner Koczo Kristof (HUN) should play in IM groups already.
FM-A -2 group winner Juhasz Armin (HUN) showed up a consistent fighting spirit that helped him to victory.
FM-B winner Krstulovic Alex (HUN) is only eight years old but his success was not a surprise for those who know that he is double Hungarian U10 Champion both in regular and in rapid chess.
