The 80th Ukrainian Chess Championship was held from 9th to 21st June at the Ukrainian House in Kiev. Out of 12 participants of the round-robin event 3 grandmasters have the ELO rating higher than 2700 and 6 participants have the ELO rating higher than 2600. Therefore, the average rating is 2650,5, which corresponds to the 17th category and makes the event the strongest Championship ever in the history of independent Ukraine.
Former World Champion Ruslan Ponomariov won the last two games and convincingly took the first place with 8.5 points, full point ahead of the second placed Pavel Eljanov.
