Vassily Ivanchuk Wins 46th Capablanca Memorial Print

capablanca2011The 46th Capablanca Memorial was held from 9th to 21st May at the Riviera Hotel in Havana, Cuba. A number of different tournaments took place - Elite Group, Premier Group, Open Group I, Open Group II and Open Group Children.

Vassily Ivanchuk defeated Le Quang Liem in the final round and in the process took the title of the annual competition. Prior to the beginning of the final match, the Vietnamese was leading the standings with 6.5 points and only a victory could secure the crown for Ivanchuk, who had 5.5 units.

Thus, 49 moves of a French Defense later, the Ukrainian star walked away not only with the win in the match but also with his fifth Capablanca Memorial title winning the tiebreak after the two players finished with 6.5 points apiece.

Also in the Elite Group, world junior champion Dmitry Andreikin placed third with 5.5 points, followed by Czech David Navara (5.0), and Cubans Leinier Dominguez (three times winner of Capablanca Memorial, 4.5) and Lazaro Bruzon (with one Capablanca trophy, 2.0), who had his worst tournament in years.

In addition, there were FIDE Arbiters Seminar, Conference about Jose Raul Capablanca, Exhibition of artwork, books and objects related to chess, and screening of chess-related movies.
