Playing Venue

The 2nd Bahamas National Open 2011 had a format of 4 s/s, G90 and both BCF and FIDE rated. There were two sections – Candidates and Scholastic. Daaim Shabazz founder of the Chess Drum (www.thechessdrum.net) was the special guest of The Bahamas Chess Federation. A summary of the 2nd Bahamas Open 2011 Tournament has been posted on the Chess Drum website at http://www.thechessdrum.net/blog/2011/04/25/2011-bahamas-national-open/ .

The Bahamas Open was won by Yan Lyansky with 3 ½ points from 4 games. His final game against Daaim Shabazz was a razor sharp French Defence. On the road to winning the tournament Yan won against Seth Rollins in Round 1, drew with NM Byron Small in Round 2, defeated Elton Joseph in Round 3, and won against Daaim Shabazz in the final round.

Tournament winner - Yan Lyansky

From L-R: Bahamas NM Byron Small and Daaim Shabazz during Round 4

Going into the final round, Daaim was playing the white pieces and only needed a draw to win the tournament. He played a gambit against Yan and perhaps the most entertaining game of the tournament. During the tournament Daaim played, Andre White, Charles Duncombe, Chappel Whyms and Yan Lyansky.

Bahamas4

From L-R: Umar Newry and Tamiko McDonald

Umar and Tamiko finished the tournament with 2 and 2 ½ points respectively. Tamiko played in last year’s Bahamas Open and finished joint first with Kean Smith. Smith did not play in this year’s Open because he organized the tournament.

Bahamas5

From L-R: Hatchie Robinson, Chappel Whyms and Charles Duncombe

Hatchie has been inactive for many years and reactivated his playing last year. He finished thi year’s Open Tournament with very good result. He won against current National Champion Ken Gibson and drew with NM Byron Small. After an excellent result in the 2010 Bahamas National Chess Championship, Chappel finished with 3 points from 4 games only losing to Daaim Shabazz. Charles Duncombe is the 2006 Bahamas National Chess Champion. Although he has been inactive since last year, Charles finished with 3 points from 4 games only losing to Daaim Shabazz in Round 2.

Bahamas6

Daaim Shabazz

Daaim of the Chess Drum was The Bahamas Chess Federation’s special guest during the 2nd Bahamas Open 2011. The leadership of the BCF is grateful that Daaim visited during the weekend of the tournament and was able to discuss numerous topics of mutual interest.

bahamas7

Elton Joseph

While Elton finished with a disappointing 2 points from 4 games, he should have won an award for the cool sun glasses! Elton is one of two Bahamians who won more than two Bahamas Junior Chess Championships. Antoinette Seymour is the only Bahamian player who won more Championship that Elton.

bahamas8

From L-R: Wilshire Major, Kendrick Knowles, Ken Gibson and Robert Scott

Wilshire Major is seen here battling against one of our newest members, Robert Scott. Current National Champion Ken Gibson had a disappointing tournament finishing with 1 ½ points from 4 games after losing to Chappel Whyms and Hatchie Robinson.

Bahamas9

Robert Scott

My understanding is that Robert Scott studied at the same primary school as former World Chess Champion Challenger GM Nigel Short! We will have to ask Robert to tell us more about his early chess playing days. Robert’s son Jason played in the Scholastic section.

Bahamas10

Polina Major

Polina was the youngest player in the Candidates section. Polina played in the World Youth Chess Champion 2009, Turkey. In doing so she became the first player from The Bahamas to participate in that event. Although only 10 years old, Polina tie for first place with Nelissa Thomas and won the tie-break in the Open Scholastic Individual Chess Champion 2010.
