The Super Chess Open Nakhchivan 2011 with prize fund of 66 500 USD, has seen an exciting finish in Azerbaijan. GM Anton Korobov managed to defeat the constant leader GM Paco Vallejo and snatch the first position in the last round.
That guaranteed a fantastic $10 000 first prize, among many strong players as Wang Yue, Zoltan Almasi, Eltaj Safarli, Gadir Guseinov, etc.
This is not the first big success of Korobov. The Ukrainian Grandmaster won the national championship back in 2002, in 2003 he won Linares Open, in 2003 to 2008 he has 4 medals from national championships, and in 2009 and 2010 he won Czech Open.
His latest large success was a second place at Aeroflot 2010 and a bronze medal with A DAN DZO & PGMB at the 2010 European Club Cup. With the victory of Nakhchivan he is adding more ELO points and is officially crossing the 2670 barrier.
The other big star of the tournament was the 17-years old junior from Spain Alexander Ipatov. He finished on 5th position, with the same points as Almasi and Vallejo, scoring his final 3rd GM norm and downing on the way players as GM Merab Gagunashvili, IM Davit Benidze, GM Konstantine Shanava, and drawing with black with GM Eltaj Safarli and GM Ivan Sokolov.
This final GM norm for Alexander Ipatov comes only a month after he took bronze medal and second GM norm at another Super Open - Cappelle La Grande, where he did not have mercy on the board against GM Leon Hoyos, GM Zhigalko, GM Cornette, and GM Sasikiran.
First among the local chess players were GM Gadir Guseinov and GM Eltaj Safarli both with 6,0/9. You can find the full final standings right below the photo report. More photos you can find at the dedicated photo album.
