Somali schools get sports lift through chess boards |

Despite the usually violent confrontations in Mogadishu, in the Somali capital some groups remain passionate about sports. Officials from the Somali Chess Federation (SCF) this week went to deliver chessboards to two schools, Ma’mur and Ma'ruf secondary schools.
The two institutions are in areas controlled by the Transitional Federal Government.
The event also attracted members from the Mogadishu Schools Council, the Somali Olympic Committee, and some presidents of the sports federations.
Each school was given ten tables with a chessboard fixed on them plus boxes containing chess pieces, score-keeping chronometers and other useful devices.
According to the federation, the idea is to encourage development of the sports among the students across the country. SCF president Ahmed Abdi Hassan Wata' said that thery were ready to inject more personal resources and efforts in order to see the development of chess in Somalia.
"We view education centres as the places where Chess can germinate as a sport and then spread across the country," said Mr Wata'. The plan is dubbed the Developing Chess in Schools Programme in Somalia.
