IM Goh Wei Ming Kevin brought a very strong finish and run up to first place at First Saturday GM March 2011 tournament in Budapest. However he missed the GM norm only by half a point. This was his second tournament victory in Budapest and he is planning to come back trying to complete his success with a GM norm sooner or later.

From left to right: IA Orsó, Miklós (HUN), IM Goh, Wei Ming Kevin (SIN), IO Nagy, Laszlo (HUN), CM Neubronner, Jarred (SIN) with his IM norm certificate in his hand and his proud father, who accompanied him to Budapest.

The only loss of Kevin happened against his fellow citizen Jarred Neubronner who performed IM norm making the Singaporean success complex. Jarred, a fresh graduate after a grammar school had made a serious preparation with his coach GM Boris Alterman (ISR). Surprisingly there were no Hungarian participants in the GM section but 10 players of seven foreign federations. We can not forget about the merits of IO Laszlo Nagy Tournament Director who works tirelessly on organizing these colorful chess events month by month.

The IM section ended with a small sports drama because the winner of the group Tesik Csaba (15, HUN) lost in the last round and just that point was missing for the IM norm. He has been coached by GM Gyula Sax who is a Hungarian Olympic champion. The co-winner Bagi Mate (HUN) only 16 years old could win 30 FIDE rating points. He is a member of a first division chess club Tata HAC which represents a small Hungarian town that is great at chess since IM Bokros Albert became head coach there some years ago.

There were three more groups playing just for rating. Worth mentioning that the 11 years old Vujosevics Eszter (HUN) started competitive chess only in July 2010 but her persistent work with GM Peter Lukacs (HUN) already resulted her second tournament victory.

The events were played at HOTEL MEDOSZ which is a new and pleasant venue for 2011 and also housing the Budapest Spring Festival Open tournament which starts on Friday 18th March.

More info with all games, full results, lot of photos, video and archives of past events are available at www.firstsaturday.hu
