The 36th Sevilla Open was played from 7th to 15th January. Grandmasters Stewart Haslinger and Deep Sengupta shared the first place with 7.5 points each, but the English player claimed the winner's trophy on better tiebreak score. In the final round Sengupta could only draw with GM Azer Mirzoev, while Haslinger defeated GM Farid Abbasov with black pieces.

Following with 7 points are, IM Ernesto Fernandez from Malaga, Mexico's José González, Argentine Daniel Campora, Argentina Damián Lemos, Ecuadorian Carlos Matamoros, the Cuban Fidel Corrales, German Henrik Tieske, Canadian Kevin Spraggett, Croatian Bogdan Lalic, the Azeri Azer Mirzoev and Croatian Ante Saric.

Ernesto Fernandez won his third and final GM norm, now it only remains to earn rating points for the 2500 level.
